Pianist Gerald Clayton has released his debut recording with Concord Jazz, Life Forum. This 12-song set combines Clayton’s highly skilled trio members, bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown with saxophonists Logan Richardson and Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Vocalists Gretchen Parlato and Sachal Vasandani and poet Carl Hancock Rux complete the ensemble. As Clayton states, “From everyone’s high level of musicality, open ears, creativity and love for one another has emerged a product that is so much more than the sum of its parts.” He adds, “This record is about gathering my favorite musicians and giving them the best platform to explore and openly express themselves. I take the same concepts and values that lead to creative expression as a credo to live by, hence Life Forum.” Clayton considers Life Forum possibly his most ambitious album to date, which is no small claim considering the artistic and commercial success of Two Shade, his Grammy-nominated 2009 debut album, followed by the equally acclaimed 2011 – also Grammy-nominated – Bond: The Paris Sessions (he received a third nomination in 2012 for his composition, Battle Circle, written for The Clayton Brothers). “I am writing more now than I have ever done [...]

New York April 9, 2013 – Gospel Jazz artist Petula Beckles who blessed audiences with her debut album “My Song Of Jesus,” is at it again, working on her sophomore project entitled “Blue Notes.” This time around she’s using a type of funding called Crowd Funding or Crowd Sharing, where fans and followers can take part and aid artists in defraying the cost of the album. The funding campaign is happening on a site called Indiegogo.com and it’s scheduled to end on May 4th 2013. Fans interested in supporting this effort is encouraged to visit the site and examine the various perks in exchanged for their donation. Donations will primarily be used for musicians, recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, marketing and promotion. This process will give fans and supporting parties an idea of what it cost to produce a quality project and the pain-staking but joyous journey from the beginning notes all the way to the completed album in shrink-wrap. In her own words, “I am raising funds for the recording, release, and promotion of My New Record “Blue Notes.” The resulting recording will be placed with a record label and shared with the world.
Whether performing, composing, or interviewing world-famous musical figures, Michael Gallant relies on a potent combination of guts and musicality, learning and improvisation to see him through — and his first album with the Michael Gallant Trio is no exception. Released on February 12, the album features Gallant on piano and keyboard, DownBeat Critics Poll winner Linda Oh on bass, and New York session drummer Chris Infusino on percussion; the album was engineered and mixed by Grammy® award-winning engineer Mario J McNulty and produced by Gallant and Rachel Rossos. And though Completely is Gallant’s first release captaining a keyboard trio, it’s far from his first statement when it comes to improvisational music. The son of a musical household, Gallant began studying piano at age five. Improvisation followed eight years later, thanks to a fiery teacher at the Levine School of Music named Maria Rodriguez. “She taught me the blues, how to improvise long melodic lines, and how to say a lot with just a single note or rest,” says Gallant. When Rodriguez passed away from cancer, Gallant wrote “The Real Maria” in her memory, and a version of the song is featured on Completely. “Rather than paying tribute to her by [...]

Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue marks 50th anniversary of release of historic Ellington-Mingus-Roach recording Featuring Gerald Clayton and Christian McBride, with guests Clark Terry, Lizz Wright, Herbie Hancock and others In 1962, Duke Ellington recorded a trio date with bassist Charlie Mingus and drummer Max Roach that is today considered one of the pivotal jazz recordings of the 1960s. Money Jungle, the 1963 album that emerged from the session, was – among other things – a commentary on the perennial tug-of-war between art and commerce. In some ways, the album’s 11 tracks were intended as a sort of counterbalance to the capitalist bent of the Mad Men generation. Fifty years later, this precarious balance in the world of jazz – or in any art form, for that matter – hasn’t changed much. Enter GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington, who enlists the aid of two high-profile collaborators – keyboardist Gerald Clayton and bassist Christian McBride – to pay tribute to Duke, his trio and his creative vision with a cover of this historic recording. Carrington’s Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue was released on Concord Jazz on February 5, 2013. Duke’s original recording is something that [...]

Move features contra-bass guitarist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips On her 2011 album, Voice, Hiromi sought to capture people’s “inner voices” and strove to create what she called a “three-dimensional sound.” For that album, the Japanese composer/pianist assembled a trio that included herself and two veteran players – contra-bass guitarist Anthony Jackson (Paul Simon, The O’Jays, Steely Dan, Chick Corea) and drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who, Judas Priest, David Gilmour, Jack Bruce). While Hiromi had played with Jackson prior to recording Voice, she had never recorded an entire album with either him or Phillips. “I had such a great time recording with them, and we went on the road together and that was even more fun,” she says. “As soon as we started playing live shows, we grew up as a band. It was the biggest fun I’ve ever had in my life musically. That’s why I wanted to do another record. I couldn’t let it go. I wanted to do it again.” While on the road, Hiromi started writing music for a follow-up, Move, set for U.S. release March 5, 2013 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group. (European release date is October 2, 2012.) “Because [...]
